After listening to a few tracks from Beady Belle, I realized that she's one of those groups who are pretty good when you listen to them, but she's great when you see her live. In a way that's good in that it makes me feel the twenty dollars I spent was worth it, but in another way, its difficult to recapture the 'essence' of the group.
I found this Detroit guy living in Vancouver, it was really interesting reading what he thought of the place and the differences between America and Canada. Its only too bad he didn't capture his thoughts on video and then make a TV show out of it, sell it to CBC... oh wait!
Went to a Jazz City yesterday with Alex and Diana to go see Beady Belle. It was great, very funk, very cool, pretty modern with a bit of classic jazz mixed in. The lead singer was sequencing some of strings and other beats through her Mac (I think it was a Titanium) so that was neat. The beats themselves were really quick paced with a great flow. I didn't dance the first set because, well I wasn't really expecting to-actually I knew somewhere in the back of my mind I would cuz I changed clothes and stuff. Alex and I went to Tim Horton's during the break and I got a Crueller... mm Crueller. That did it for me, so here I was all sugarred up, beats are going Di's out there dancing by the third song in the set, of course I went out. It was good that there were a lot of people there already. It felt like a fast samba or something but almost everyone was doing standard dancing-so standard it is! (No partner either). All in all at first, I was sort of worried about if Alex would blow it all off as some big modern art/interpretive thing but then I came to realize that it didn't really matter. He could sit back and be in the framework, I can go out-no one would be the lesser man. All in all, it was a good time.
Personally smoke is my largest pet peeve. I'm not saying the people who smoke are bad, but in general I abhor the way cigarette smoke just permeates everything. It hangs in the air like giant invisible chunks of lard staining everything it touches. I'll be happy when Edmonton bans smoke in all public places in 2005-I can't wait. Maybe I should just move to Ottawa or Vancouver :P
A petition has been passing around about a recent ruling in Ontario with regards to the definition change for the term marriage. I myself have been struggling with the terminology that they're using. Some surveys have had the question 'Should homosexuals have the right to marry' which is quite different, its not a matter of whether anyone has a right to do anything. Its really about recognition. I have a right to have an opinion, you have a right to have a differing one, I respect that. Where I think it becomes contentious is whether one party recognizes the results of that right. You could disagree but if I were to say "punch-you-in-the-face" (thanks Iron Mongoose) for disagreeing (in other words not recognize your opinion) that would be wrong.
Then there's the new definition of marriage: "a voluntary union between two persons", that seems, no, that is very vague. In fact it seems like a blanket term to cover everyone (including married people? what about minors?) Its too hasty in my opinion to change it that way. If you'll note, I haven't even mentionned whether I agree with homosexual marriages, this isn't the point. Its the fact that drastic changes have been made without proper consultations. This is the 'wing-it and see' constitutional change.
