The Misadventures of Dan

Peer into the mind of Dan as he tries to build an MP3 Player for his PDA and searches for the next thing in his life be it an electrical engineering job or graduate school.

Oh!!! That's what they were called

After trying to search for "consecutive html tags css", "consecutive css tags", "alternating css styles" none of which turned up what I wanted I finally came up with this Child Selectors in CSS2. Why was it so hard to find!? I guess Child Selectors make sense but at the same time it was not easy to find it. It was only after reading an ALA(for something else) that I came across a byline referring to them. Hmm.

Multiple Explorers

I came across this before but lost it, now I found it again:). Since Internet Explorer handles CSS and even some HTML differently for each version (<5 , 5, 5.5, 6) its good to see how the pages are rendered on on each version. The problem is that to have a separate standalone version of IE I thought you needed a separate OS. Which really sucks, of course you could pay for a service like Browser Cam but that's bit out of my budget for recreational design. I want my designs to work in the basics meaning IE 5 through 6, and Mozilla 1.4+.

Colour seems to play more and more of part (go figure) in terms of layout-which makes having an online colour wheel handy :D

"Dan, you have mail from Dan"

So, this morning I received a most unusual piece of e-mail:

Hi Dan, My name's Daniel Tse (yeah, me too), and I google my own name every so often just to make sure that nothing's been written about me (it does happen, and it's not always good!). I'm the Dan Tse who appeared in the film "SpyGame" and who is the press contact for ddmiglobal, textonezero, mformobile, eyeforfood and a whole load of other business conferences. Anyway I came across your site (very nice, if I might add), and all of a sudden thought of Dave Gorman. I don't know whether you're aware of Dave Gorman in Canada. He's a British comedian who managed to write a whole stand-up comedy TV series about his mission to find 50 guys in the world with the same name as him. It sounds like the most boring show in the world, but he's such a great storyteller that he could probably write a comedy series about anything. Check out www.davegorman.com. No, I'm not wanting to write a TV comedy series (even if I did, it's been done). However, it might make a silly little feature on your website. As in: "I'm Dan Tse, but I might not be the Dan Tse you were searching for. Try one of these..." and then a directory of other Dan Tse's around the world. Stop me if you think it's a crap idea, but the idea amused my warped sense of humour. All the best, Dan Tse #2

Wow! This is my first contact with another Daniel Tse! I found this kind of neat because although I've done searches before, I've never actually contacted them. Anyways I thought that was really cool and I might end up following his suggestion about a Worldwide Dan Directory. Yes its about time we had a WWDD!

But of course!

Had a great discussion with some people from eMi Canada. A lot of things were impromptu but true, people crave a sense of belonging-having online journals and photo albums help create a closer connection. That being said, we agreed on a design (yay!) and quite a few ideas were put forward. Its always important to understand what the client wants, and if they don't know, help them envision what could be. The new version of layout incorporates flags of different countries, of course stock photos don't really help you with stuff like that so after some quick searching I came across Flags.net. Of course... what else could it be?

I'm toying around with the concept of having a second journal-one that's less technical. This is leading to evaluating different types of blog sites. Each has their own benefits of course, but I didn't realize how big the whole "skinning" thing is. In talking with my friend Di, I think we both agree that using pre-fab templates is generally... not us, but how hard would it be to build a brand new one? This site uses a very clean and simple layout because there aren't that many photos. So after a bit of fooling around, I submitted one to Blogskins. The whole idea of the site is really a cool concept-some of the designs look great.
