People, use the right DOCTYPE!

That's it. I'm switching to XHTML 1.1 instead of HTML 4.01 strict. After spending hours on trying to get the menu image replacement to work I fixed it. Turns out there was nothing wrong with the CSS or the HTML, but simply the default DOC TYPE that pspad gives for HTML. It's not really pspad's fault; it's mine for not checking what document declaration I was using. Anyway, the fruit of this labour is a new template for pspad which should speed things up and a new site layout for a certain sheep.

In my initial design I had forgotten that blogspot adds a top banner to the page. By changing the CSS I was able to move the backgroud down by 50 pixels-quick and easy! One of the immediate benefits to CSS is the fact that once you have the HTML all done, you could host the CSS file (and pictures) elsewhere. This makes style changes much easier to do and cleaner.

Since I was modifying an existing page I wanted to keep some of the previous structure the same to give a familiar but new look. The tagboard and friends list are still together but now on the other side (right vs. left) with a lighter shade of colour. I removed the picture links from the list just to give the top menu bar another link (otherwise it would have only had 2 links). Simplicity is, as always, key (I think) to webpages: you want people to get to what they want quickly. Also moving the photos around would actually draw more attention to it than its previous location. I'm liking this "floating section" for the pictures section that I first tried with the ASK website. It's handy for those instances when you want to draw attention to a small amount of information and don't want to create a separate page for it. This is actually the first "colourful" page I designed using very bright, vibrant colours which was actually hard to get started.

<p>Recently, I've been using Surpass Hosting for a lot of my contracts. They're pretty good and have a decent price for what they're offering. They give you tons of things including cPanel loaded with stats. The problem was how to give people access to their statistics without having to log into cpanel.</p>

<p>There were several options: one was to install Awstats in a public directory, another was to setup a cron job to copy all the statistics, finally I came across this <a href="http://www.uh-network.co.uk/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1656&highlight=&">php script</a>. It's nice because it's really simple and easy to use. The only problem that people might have is the security of the script.</p>

Macromedia and Adobe

Have merged... well, more like Adobe acquired Macromedia. I don't think this will change Flash but I think that Fireworks will bear the brunt of the damages :(. I like Fireworks, the only thing that was a shame was the lack of publicized plugins. I liked how it was quick and easy to use for exporting-the slicing was completely incorporated. You could export individual slices, I haven't played around enough with Photoshop or Gimp to learn how to do that. Maybe if I just took the time to :P It's not the end of the world, hopefully this will make Photoshop better. I just really got attached to Fireworks.

Project Contempo was recently released for public consumption. A lot of the information is still in the to-be-filled stage but it's an interesting conference. I hope it goes well.

Soldiers of Fitness has set up a new office in Calgary! Woo! They asked for some minor and some (relatively) major changes. Minor changes are the address at the footer of each page and the major change was the location page. It used to be a static map but now it's all jazzed up with flash because they wanted to have something cooler. The neat thing is that it's only 53kb! For those who don't want flash the address is still listed below and I wanted to do some other things with it but Swift3D isn't at that level yet... or maybe I don't know how to use it well enough to get it to look like what I had in mind.
